Skiing |
|
Skiing is the art of gliding over snow using skis.
The invention of
bindings in the 19th century enabled skiers to make turns while
skiing downhill.
As binding designs advanced so did the skills of steering while
skiing through the use of specific body rotations which has
evolved into skiing as we know it today.
Skiing Equipment Apart from standard snow clothing used to keep skiers warm and
dry, skiing equipment consists primarily of:
- skis which are the long flat instrument worn on the feet while skiing over snow,
- ski bindings which anchors ski boots to their skis,
- ski boots which attach the skier to the skis via ski bindings,
- ski poles which are used for balance, speed and acceleration control,
- ski wax which is applied to the bottom of skis for improved performance, and
- ski suits which can be worn for added warmth or to reduce wind resistance when speed is essential.
